Official assessment criteria

Below is what the official page says about the writing and speaking tests, reproduced word for word. Note that the list of abilities covers the whole test: the official text does not split it by task, and neither do we.

Written expression (Expression écrite)

This test assesses the ability to express oneself in written French and consists of 3 tasks:

  1. Tâche 1Expected length: minimum 60 words / maximum 120 words.

    Rédaction d’un message pour décrire, raconter et/ou expliquer, adressé à un ou plusieurs destinataires, dont le statut a été précisé dans la consigne.

    Writing a message to describe, recount and/or explain, addressed to one or more recipients whose status is specified in the instructions.

  2. Tâche 2Expected length: minimum 120 words / maximum 150 words.

    Rédaction d’un article, d’un courrier, d’une note, … à l’intention de plusieurs destinataires pour faire un compte rendu d’expérience ou un récit. Comptes rendus et récits seront accompagnés de commentaires, d’opinions ou d’arguments, en fonction d’un objectif (ex : revendiquer, se réconcilier, …).

    Writing an article, a letter, a note, etc. intended for several recipients, reporting on an experience or telling a story. Reports and accounts are to be accompanied by comments, opinions or arguments, depending on an objective (e.g. to make a demand, to reconcile, etc.).

  3. Tâche 3Expected length: minimum 120 words / maximum 180 words.

    Rédaction d’un texte (pour un journal, un site Internet, un collègue, un supérieur hiérarchique, …) qui compare deux points de vue portant sur un fait de société, exprimés dans deux documents. Le candidat donne son avis sur le thème traité dans les deux documents.

    Writing a text (for a newspaper, a website, a colleague, a line manager, etc.) comparing two points of view on a social issue, expressed in two documents. The candidate gives their opinion on the theme covered in the two documents.

  • communiquer un message de façon claire ;

  • donner les informations demandées ;

  • décrire, raconter, expliquer ;

    describe, recount, explain;

  • justifier un choix, une position, une décision, … ;

    justify a choice, a position, a decision, etc.;

  • enchaîner des idées et faire preuve de cohérence dans son discours ;

    link ideas together and show coherence in one's discourse;

  • comparer deux points de vue ;

    compare two points of view;

  • exprimer son avis et l’argumenter ;

    express one's opinion and argue for it;

  • utiliser un vocabulaire et des structures adaptés à la tâche demandée ;

    use vocabulary and structures suited to the task set;

  • être capable de reformuler.

ATTENTION ! La copie d’expression écrite pourrait être évaluée « A1 non atteint » si :

WARNING! A written expression paper may be graded “A1 non atteint” (below A1) if:

  • l’écriture n’est pas lisible (en cas de passation sur support papier) ;

    the handwriting is not legible (for paper-based sittings);

  • chaque tâche n’est pas réalisée avec le nombre mots exigé ;

    each task is not completed with the required number of words;

  • la production est hors-sujet ;

    the piece is off-topic;

  • une ou plusieurs tâches ne sont pas réalisées.

    one or more tasks are not completed.

Speaking (Expression orale)

This test assesses the ability to express oneself in spoken French and consists of 3 tasks:

  1. Tâche 12 minutes.

    Entretien dirigé sans préparation : le candidat doit faire la preuve de sa capacité à échanger avec une personne qu’il ne connaît pas (l’examinateur).

    Guided interview without preparation: the candidate must demonstrate their ability to converse with someone they do not know (the examiner).

  2. Tâche 25 minutes 30, including 2 minutes of preparation.

    Exercice en interaction avec préparation : le candidat doit faire la preuve de sa capacité à obtenir des informations dans une situation de la vie quotidienne courante. Le statut de l’interlocuteur et du candidat sont précisés dans la consigne.

    Interactive exercise with preparation: the candidate must demonstrate their ability to obtain information in an everyday situation. The status of the other speaker and of the candidate are specified in the instructions.

  3. Tâche 34 minutes 30.

    Expression d’un point de vue sans préparation : le candidat fait preuve de sa capacité à parler de manière spontanée, continue et convaincante en répondant à une question choisie par l’examinateur.

    Expressing a point of view without preparation: the candidate demonstrates their ability to speak spontaneously, continuously and convincingly in answer to a question chosen by the examiner.

  • parler de soi, de son environnement, familial et professionnel ;

    talk about oneself and one's family and working environment;

  • poser des questions adaptées à la situation de communication proposée ;

    ask questions suited to the communication situation set;

  • donner son opinion et expliquer les avantages et inconvénients d’un projet, exprimer son accord et son désaccord ;

    give one's opinion and explain the advantages and disadvantages of a plan, express agreement and disagreement;

  • présenter une argumentation claire et structurée dans un style approprié au contexte ;

    present a clear, structured argument in a style appropriate to the context;

  • présenter de façon détaillée et structurée des sujets complexes, les développer et conclure.

    present complex subjects in a detailed and structured way, develop them and conclude.
