The Verb manger (and all -ger verbs)

manger: one verb that teaches thirty

Talking about food is a daily thing, and manger is one of the most frequent verbs on the TCF. It's the textbook model for regular 1st-group -er verbs, but it hides one small spelling mechanism — learn it and you instantly get voyager, nager, ranger, changer, partager, plonger and more.

💡 The intuition: the letter g naturally wants a hard [g] sound (as in gâteau). To keep the soft [ʒ] of manger, we slip an e in front of an a or o. That e in nous mangeons or je mangeais is just a cushion protecting the sound.

Present

je mange, tu manges, il mange, nous mangeons (⚡ + e), vous mangez, ils mangent.

Passé composé

avoir + mangé: j'ai mangé, tu as mangé, il a mangé…

Imparfait

Rule: add e before a/o, not before i.

Future

je mangerai, tu mangeras, il mangera, nous mangerons, vous mangerez, ils mangeront.

Conditional

je mangerais… nous mangerions… ils mangeraient.

Subjunctive

que je mange, que tu manges, qu'il mange, que nous mangions, que vous mangiez, qu'ils mangent.

Imperative

mange, mangeons (⚡ + e), mangez.

⚠️ The #1 trap: the vanishing e, plus the partitive article

Three classic mistakes, all tied to manger:

Partitive logic: you eat some of an uncountable thing (du pain, de la viande, de l'eau). In the negative, everything becomes de: Je ne mange pas de viande.

The -ger family

All -ger verbs share manger's spelling rule: voyager, nager, ranger, changer, partager, plonger, déranger, mélanger, corriger, neiger…

-cer verbs (commencer family)

Same idea for the [s] sound: c → ç before a/o.

• nous commençons, je commençais.

Food/drink collocations

• manger la soupe (yes, you "eat" soup in French!)
• prendre un repas / le petit déjeuner / un café
• boire un verre

TCF tips

• nous mangeons without e = misspelling.
• nous mangions with extra e = misspelling.
• manger du pain / de la viande (partitive), negative → de.
