Why prendre is six verbs in one
Learn prendre's conjugation and you also learn:

💡 The intuition: in the singular you keep the stem's d (je prends, il prend); in the plural the d drops out (nous prenons, ils prennent), and ils/elles doubles the n (prennent). 🏠 The trick: prend → singular keeps the d; pren- → plural drops the d; prennent → ils/elles doubles the n. One rule for the whole family.
Present
je prends, tu prends, il/elle prend, nous prenons (one n), vous prenez (one n), ils/elles prennent (two n).

prendre and its whole family (apprendre, comprendre, surprendre…) conjugate exactly the same way and trip up in the same spot: the singular keeps the d, the plural drops it, and ils/elles doubles the n. The past participle is always pris.

🔑 In short: d = singular, no d = plural; and two n's for ils. Same rule for apprennent, comprennent, surprennent.

apprendre has two senses
- J'apprends le français. = I'm learning French.
- J'apprends le français à mon fils. = I'm teaching my son French.
