Y or en? The two little French pronouns

Pick the pronoun by the preposition: à → y, de → en. Both sit before the verb. With a person keep the stressed pronoun (Je pense à lui). En keeps the number (J'en ai deux).
The difference in one line
y and en replace something already mentioned — the choice depends on the preposition:

Shortcut: à → y; de → en.
Position: always before the verb
- Simple tense: J'y vais. · J'en ai.
- Negative: Je n'y vais pas. · Je n'en ai pas.
- Compound tense: J'y suis allé. · J'en ai pris.
- Affirmative imperative: Vas-y! · Prends-en! (add an s to -er verbs)
The quantity trap: en keeps the number ⚠️
- J'ai two voitures. → J'en ai deux.
- Combien de café ? — J'en veux trois.
- Beaucoup d'amis ? — J'en ai beaucoup.
en replaces the noun, but un / deux / beaucoup / un peu stay.
Trap: à / de + a person → stressed pronoun ⚠️
Only things / places become y / en; for a person keep the stressed pronoun (lui / elle / eux…):

The three sources of en
- Place de (from): Tu viens de Lyon ? — Oui, j'en viens.
- Verb + de: parler de, avoir besoin de, avoir envie de → J'en ai envie.
- Quantity / partitive: du café, des amis, trois pommes → J'en prends.
The two sources of y
- Place: à / dans / sur / chez + place → J'y vais.
- à + thing: penser à, réfléchir à, jouer à → J'y joue.
