Je m'appelle Thomas Leroy, j'ai 34 ans et je suis français. Actuellement, j'habite à Nantes avec ma femme et notre fille de cinq ans. Je travaille comme infirmier dans un hôpital public depuis une dizaine d'années. J'ai fait ma formation à l'IFSI de Nantes juste après le bac, et dès que j'ai eu mon diplôme, j'ai été embauché aux urgences. Il y a trois ans, je suis passé dans un service plus calme — la pneumologie — parce que ma fille venait de naître et que je voulais des horaires plus stables. Au quotidien, mon rôle consiste à accompagner les patients, à préparer les soins et à collaborer avec l'équipe médicale. En dehors du travail, j'aime beaucoup bricoler — on a acheté une vieille maison il y a deux ans que je rénove petit à petit. Si je passe le TCF Canada, c'est parce que ma femme et moi envisageons sérieusement de nous installer au Québec. I trained at the Nantes nursing school right after high school, and as soon as I graduated I was hired in the ER. Three years ago, I moved to a calmer unit — pulmonology — because my daughter had just been born and I wanted more stable hours. Day to day, my role is caring for patients, preparing treatments, and working with the medical team. Outside work, I really enjoy DIY — we bought an old house two years ago that I'm renovating little by little. The reason I'm taking the TCF Canada is that my wife and I are seriously considering moving to Québec. The working conditions for nurses there appeal to us, and we'd like to offer our daughter a different kind of environment. If all goes well, we hope to move within a year and a half.

En fait, pour nous, c'était assez naturel. Comme on parle déjà français, on s'est dit que l'intégration serait plus simple — surtout pour notre fille qui n'a que cinq ans. On a aussi de la famille éloignée à Montréal qu'on a visitée l'été dernier, et on est tombés amoureux de la ville. Il y a une bonne qualité de vie, les hôpitaux recrutent activement, et le système scolaire nous semble solide. L'hiver nous fait un peu peur, évidemment, mais je pense qu'on va s'y habituer avec le temps.
Honestly, it felt fairly natural to us. Since we already speak French, we figured integration would be easier — especially for our five-year-old daughter. We also have distant family in Montréal we visited last summer, and we fell in love with the city. There's a good quality of life, hospitals are actively hiring, and the school system looks solid. Of course winter scares us a bit, but I think we'll get used to it over time.

Pour nous, c'était un choix assez évident. D'abord, parce qu'à Montréal on pourra continuer à parler français au quotidien, ce qui est rassurant surtout pour les enfants qui vont devoir changer d'école. Ensuite, j'ai un ami d'enfance qui vit là-bas depuis cinq ans, et il nous a beaucoup parlé de la qualité de vie et du dynamisme du marché de l'emploi dans l'ingénierie. Et puis, nous aimons l'idée d'une ville multiculturelle, avec une forte communauté nord-africaine, où nos enfants pourront grandir sans perdre totalement leurs repères. Bien sûr, l'hiver nous inquiète un peu, mais nous nous y préparons psychologiquement.
For us it was a pretty obvious choice. First, because in Montréal we'll be able to keep speaking French day-to-day, which is reassuring especially for the kids who'll have to change schools. Second, I have a childhood friend who's lived there for five years and has told us a lot about the quality of life and how dynamic the engineering job market is. And then, we like the idea of a multicultural city with a strong North African community where our kids can grow up without completely losing their bearings. Winter worries us a bit, of course, but we're mentally preparing for it.

Depuis sept ans, je suis ingénieur logiciel dans une grande entreprise de e-commerce, où je suis principalement responsable de l'architecture back-end des systèmes de paiement. Ce qui me plaît, c'est cet équilibre qu'on ne voit pas ailleurs : une Amérique du Nord qui a gardé une âme européenne. J'apprécie que, même si la vie y est plus rapide qu'en France, il reste un attachement fort à la langue, à la culture, aux petits commerces de quartier. Sur le plan professionnel, l'écosystème tech montréalais est très dynamique, surtout autour de l'intelligence artificielle — j'ai lu que le gouvernement investissait massivement dans ce secteur. Et sur le plan personnel, ce qui m'attire, c'est la diversité : j'ai l'impression qu'on peut y construire une vie sans avoir à renoncer à ses racines. Il faudra que je m'habitue aux hivers, bien sûr, mais je pense que ça vaut largement le coup.
What I like is this balance you don't see elsewhere: a North America that has kept a European soul. I appreciate that, even though life is faster there than in France, there's still a strong attachment to language, culture, and neighborhood shops. Professionally, Montréal's tech ecosystem is very dynamic, especially around AI — I've read that the government is investing heavily in that sector. Personally, what draws me is the diversity: I feel you can build a life there without having to give up your roots. I'll have to get used to the winters, of course, but I think it's well worth it.
