What This Task Looks Like on the TCF
Speaking Tâche 1, also called entretien dirigé (guided interview), is the first question on the whole test. Features:
- Duration: 1 minute 30 seconds to 2 minutes
- Format: The examiner asks 4-6 consecutive questions about your personal life—self-introduction, job/studies, hobbies, daily routine, most recent trip or activity
- Level range: A1 → B1
- Key point: The examiner won’t let you preview questions, and you can’t choose topics—you must answer whatever you hear
Full score is based on 6 criteria (each /4):
- Communication ability (did you directly address the question)
- Vocabulary breadth
- Vocabulary accuracy
- Grammar structure breadth
- Grammar structure accuracy
- Pronunciation / intonation
Why Just Using ChatGPT Alone Is Useless
Most people’s prompts are like: “Play a French teacher to help me practice TCF Speaking Task 1.” The result is the chat tool will:
- Throw 6 questions at you all at once (real exam asks one by one)
- Give an “AI score” after each answer, breaking exam rhythm
- Have no 6-criteria framework, just vague “grammar is good, keep it up”
- Not know B1 vs B2 boundaries or where you’re stuck
Our prompt in this link embeds all the rules above: one question at a time, no correction during the exam, all scoring at the end, strictly scoring by FEI’s 6 criteria.
Sample Dialogue
Tool: Bonjour, je suis votre examinateur TCF Canada pour l'épreuve d'expression orale, Tâche 1. Cet entretien dure environ deux minutes. Êtes-vous prêt·e ?
You: Oui, je suis prêt.
Tool: Pouvez-vous vous présenter brièvement ? Votre nom, d'où vous venez, et ce que vous faites actuellement ?
You: (Answer in French with 2-3 sentences)
Tool: (No correction, directly next question) Très bien. Pouvez-vous me parler de votre travail ou de vos études ?
(After question 6, the tool ends the simulation and provides a /4 score table for the 6 criteria + 3 typical mistakes you made + a B2 model answer + 2 “+1 level” expression suggestions)
Common Pitfalls for Candidates
- Answers too short: 3-5 word answers score zero across all 6 criteria. The tool will ask “Pouvez-vous développer un peu ?” to prompt you, but real examiners just stay silent
- Using only present tense: Repeating je suis, j’aime without passé composé / futur proche means grammar breadth scores a flat /1
- Going off-topic on keywords: Examiner asks "Que faites-vous le week-end ?" and you hear “week-end” and recite a weekend essay unrelated to the question
- Avoiding words you can’t say: reformuler is not shameful—phrases like “ce qu'on appelle...”, “c'est un peu comme...” are B2 signals
Build Basics Daily on HiTCF, Then Run Realistic Simulations Before the Exam
Prompt tools feel great for live dialogue but are only for last-minute practical training. For daily basics, use HiTCF Speaking Tâche 1 Systematic Training:
- Real questions / sample answers / timed like the real exam (2 minutes)
- FEI 6-criteria automatic scoring, telling you if you’re stuck on vocabulary breadth or grammar accuracy
- Free 7-day Pro trial on registration, with 5 listening/reading questions + 5 explanations daily forever free
Once your basics are solid, run several rounds of live random simulations with ChatGPT before the exam—to experience the tension of “examiner asks on the spot, you must answer immediately,” which is more useful than endlessly repeating the same real questions.
