Elision (le → l', je → j', de → d')
About a dozen short words (le, la, je, me, te, se, ne, de, ce, que…) drop their final vowel before a vowel or mute h and take an apostrophe. si only elides before il / ils, and an aspirated h blocks it entirely.

French avoids two vowels colliding. About a dozen short words drop their final vowel and take an apostrophe instead:
- le + arbre → l'arbre · je + ai → j'ai · de + eau → d'eau
That is élision. The list of words it applies to is short and closed — learn it once.

You will hear t'es fatigué, t'as faim in speech; in writing it stays tu es / tu as.
What triggers it: a vowel or a mute h
- Vowel (a e i o u y): l'ami · l'idée · l'orange · j'y vais
- Mute h (the vast majority): l'hôtel · l'homme · l'heure · l'hiver
- ⚠️ Aspirated h blocks it: le héros · la haine · le hasard · la Hollande

Elision ≠ liaison ≠ contraction

Elision changes the spelling, liaison changes the sound, contraction changes the word.
