moi, mois or moins? One letter changes everything
Three words one letter apart: moi and mois sound exactly the same (the final s is silent), while moins takes a nasal vowel. Covers the s in un mois that never goes away, the au moins / au mois de pair, and the liaison in moins important.

Why they get mixed up
- One s or one n of difference — nothing your eye picks up at reading speed.
- The final s is silent, so
moiandmoisare homophones; only context separates them. - The n nasalises the vowel, so
moinslands on a different sound. That is the one audible difference among the three. - The meanings give you no help either: “me”, “month” and “less” have nothing in common.

That s is not a plural marker someone forgot to drop: it belongs to the stem. A whole family of nouns behaves this way:

The signature trap: au moins ≠ au mois de

moins: sound and liaison
- On its own it is [mwɛ̃], with a silent final s. What separates it from
moisis the nasal vowel, not the s. - Before a vowel the liaison kicks in and that s is pronounced [z]:
- moins important [mwɛ̃-z‿ɛ̃-pɔʁ-tɑ̃] (less important)
- moins intéressant (less interesting)
- In a speaking exam the nasal is worth real marks:

Shortcut
The final s is silent, so moi and mois are homophones and only what comes before tells them apart: preposition → moi, number → mois. Add the n and the vowel goes nasal: that is moins. The noun mois keeps its s in the singular — un moi does not exist. And learn one pair for good: au moins (at least) versus au mois de (in the month of).
