Why avoir matters
The number-one beginner mistake with avoir: translating "I'm hungry / I'm 20 years old" word-for-word and saying je suis faim or je suis 20 ans. French says all of these with avoir — and with no article.
avoir ("to have") is also one of the two auxiliary verbs in French (the other is être). It powers most compound tenses and dozens of fixed expressions.
💡 The intuition: French treats a feeling as something you possess — not "I am hungry" but "I have hunger" (j'ai faim). Same for age: "I have 25 years" (j'ai 25 ans). 🏠 Memory hook: after avoir + a sensation, delete the article — faim / soif / froid stay bare; add le/la/un and it's wrong.
Present
j'ai, tu as, il/elle a, nous avons, vous avez, ils/elles ont.
Listen for ils ont [ɔ̃] vs ils sont [sɔ̃] — one missing /s/ flips have↔are.
Passé composé
avoir (present) + past participle eu: j'ai eu, tu as eu, il a eu...
Imparfait
j'avais, tu avais, il avait, nous avions, vous aviez, ils avaient.
Future
Irregular stem aur-: j'aurai, tu auras, il aura, nous aurons, vous aurez, ils auront.
Conditional
j'aurais, tu aurais, il aurait, nous aurions, vous auriez, ils auraient.
Subjunctive
que j'aie, que tu aies, qu'il ait, que nous ayons, que vous ayez, qu'ils aient.
Imperative
aie, ayons, ayez.
⚠️ The one that trips everyone up: sensations / age / existence take avoir, no article
French uses avoir where English reaches for "to be" (or "to do"). Three reflexes: avoir, not être/faire; no article before the sensation; age and existence also use avoir.

🔑 Bottom line: sensations, age, existence — French "has" (avoir), it is never "is" (être).
