The Verb boire (All Tenses)

Why boire is the textbook three-stem verb

Irregular verb with three rotating stems depending on the person:

• bois- for je/tu/il
• buv- for nous/vous + imparfait
• boiv- for ils + subjunctive singular & 3rd plural

This "boot" pattern is shared by recevoir, devoir, pouvoir, vouloir, prendre.

Present

Listening trap: il boit [bwa] vs ils boivent [bwav].

Passé composé

avoir + past participle bu (irregular): j'ai bu, tu as bu, il a bu…

Imparfait

From the buv- stem: je buvais, tu buvais, il buvait, nous buvions, vous buviez, ils buvaient.

Future

Stem boir-: je boirai, tu boiras, il boira…

Conditional

je boirais, tu boirais, il boirait, nous boirions, vous boiriez, ils boiraient.

Subjunctive

Two stems: boiv- for je/tu/il/ils; buv- for nous/vous.

que je boive, que tu boives, qu'il boive, que nous buvions, que vous buviez, qu'ils boivent.

Imperative

bois, buvons, buvez.

Same three-stem rotation:

• recevoir: reçoi- / recev- / reçoiv-
• devoir: doi- / dev- / doiv-
• pouvoir: peu- / pouv- / peuv-
• vouloir: veu- / voul- / veul-

Food/drink collocations

• boire de l'eau / du café / du thé / du vin
• boire un verre, un coup
• manger la soupe (yes, "eat" soup!)
• prendre un café / le petit déjeuner
