Why boire is the textbook three-stem verb
You use it every day and the TCF loves to test it, yet boire is an irregular verb with three rotating stems that switch depending on the person. Nail it and the whole family of "boot verbs" falls into place.
- boi- for je/tu/il
- buv- for nous/vous + imparfait
- boiv- for ils + subjunctive singular & 3rd plural
💡 Intuition: the stem follows the stress — when the stress lands on the stem, the vowel "opens" into boi-/boiv- (bois, boit, boivent); when it lands on the ending, the stem "weakens" to buv- (buvons, buvez). 🏠 Mnemonic (the boot): stack the six persons in a column — je/tu/il plus ils form the four "corners" in -oi-, while nous/vous sink in the middle with buv-. It draws a boot. Same pattern: recevoir, devoir, pouvoir, vouloir.

⚠️ The #1 trap: three stems, past participle bu, and the partitive
boire is irregular: the stem shifts across boi-/buv-/boiv-; the past participle is bu (not boiré / boivu). The classic mistake is putting -oi- on nous/vous, or dropping the partitive needed for "drinking some" of something.

🔑 Remember: drinking something (with no fixed quantity) almost always takes the partitive — je bois du café / de la bière / **de l'**eau.
Passé composé
avoir + past participle bu (irregular): j'ai bu, tu as bu, il a bu…
Imparfait
From the buv- stem: je buvais, tu buvais, il buvait, nous buvions, vous buviez, ils buvaient.
Future
Stem boir-: je boirai, tu boiras, il boira…
Conditional
je boirais, tu boirais, il boirait, nous boirions, vous boiriez, ils boiraient.
Subjunctive
Two stems: boiv- for je/tu/il/ils; buv- for nous/vous.
que je boive, que tu boives, qu'il boive, que nous buvions, que vous buviez, qu'ils boivent.
Imperative
bois, buvons, buvez.
