Adverbs: how they're formed and where they go

A2

Adverbs never change form. The -ment ones are built on the feminine adjective (lente → lentement), and -ant / -ent give -amment / -emment, which sound identical. Position is the real difficulty: in compound tenses short adverbs slot between the auxiliary and the participle.

In one line

An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb, and it never changes form:

  • Elle chante bien. (verb)
  • Il est très fatigué. (adjective)
  • Elle parle trop vite. (adverb)

Adjectives agree (une fille intelligente); adverbs never do (elle parle intelligemment).
